Renovarẻ

May 22nd, 2007 by pinkbeans

Ok, I have a chunk of time on my hands to write some about the Renovarẻ conference that took place in Long Beach two weekends ago. Basically, it was a conference about spiritual formation and transformation. It was a busy week leading up to the conference, and I was running on fumes as I drove about two hours out of L.A. traffic to get to Long Beach straight from my work. This past week was fairly busy leading up to another weekend of even longer driving to Arizona to meet up with my former youth pastor and his family (from Guam—Woot!). This week is also fairly busy, and this coming up weekend will be the least amount of driving as I get to watch some friends graduate out in Redlands where I interned. So it’s been a hectic few weeks for me. All this to say that one of the nuggets of wisdom I got out of the conference was a quote from Dallas Willard: “Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.”

Psalm 16:8a says, “I keep my eyes always on the Lord.” Or another translation is “I will set the Lord always before me.” Jim, one of the speakers, mentioned the idea of “action of intention.” Choosing to be before God is an action. If we know our schedules are gonna get busy (or already are!), we should schedule time with God first and our activities around him. We need to create space for him. How often do we try to “fit” God into our schedules? It’s tough and inconsistent. But if we turn things away because we planned an afternoon to be with God, we are more likely to succeed. Similarly, Richard Foster, another speaker (author of Celebration of Disciplines), asks, “What is your intention? Are you intending to do wrong or are you intending not to do wrong?” You can’t just decide you’re “ok” when fighting temptation by not doing anything. I like the example of one of my accountability partners (Joel Hamaguchi). (I might be paraphrasing a bit). He said, “It’s like staring at a chocolate cake—not doing anything, just staring. You can’t expect to be successful if you’re on a diet from eating sweets!” You have to remove it from your view and get your mind on something else. More so, we need to intend not to do wrong and attack the problem directly by spending time with God.

i’ve never felt more inclined to read a book that a movie was based on….

not with harry potter…

Harry Potter Years 1-4 (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone / Chamber of Secrets / Prisoner of Azkaban / Goblet of Fire) (Widescreen Edition)

not with chronicles of narnia…

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Special Two-Disc Collector’s Edition)

not even with lord of the rings…

The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Special Extended DVD Edition)

but with V for Vendetta… definitely! and i don’t even know if it’s titulary with the movie. now if only someone would loan it to me, i might actually read it

da dum!

happy friday the 13th y’all!

it’s been a while since i’ve posted. it seems like a lot has happened, so i don’t really know where to begin. right now, i’m just kinda going off the top of my head.

yesterday, i got to hang out with a good friend, and we watched one of my all time favorite movies for the 3rd, maybe more-th time.

Memento
awesome movie! i understand it a little better each time i’ve watched it.

i’ve definitely felt more motivated as of late. i’ve been reading this book from my sister in the philippines: How God Works. it is good to be reminded of God’s truths. i think i know it’ll be a good year.

ok, i can breath again after that THRILLER of a game…. perhaps the GREATEST game i’ve ever seen!

i didn’t doubt on third & long.

i didn’t doubt on 4th & 9.

it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

and it’s over, and we are still on top!

some of my friends noticed that i hadn’t kept up with the push-ups for the game, and lucas was like, "jojo, that’s why we’re not scoring. DO YOUR PUSH-UPS!" and soon after we scored. now, i’m not one to believe in superstitions, but i do it to keep my team (fans in the room) pumped up, and it makes for good exercise.

and did y’all see Leinart praying? it looked like he wasn’t doing so hot, so i did a quick prayer for him. he’s awesome.

eProps for everyone!

i guess no one really wants to think about their weddings…. but then again, no one really reads these either

anywho, i’ve been recalling the 5 cities i’ve lived in in the past YEAR!

lived in redlands for 6 months–Sept.04-Feb.05  (moved from glendale)
lived in riverside for 2 months–Mar.05-Apr.05
lived in san bernardino for 2 months–May.05-Jun.05
lived in pasadena for 1 month–Jul.05

and presently, i’m living in chinatown. woot!

now you have an idea of how much i’ve had to move my stuff and what a crazy year it’s been for me. and that’s just housing!

and what do i have to show for it? a much deeper understanding of God’s faithfulness to provide!

grace, peace & love ~
